Our program consists of three parts ? lecture series, three-month internship and mentorship.
Lecture series
GHLP's lecture series is designed to help participants to gain frontier knowledge in global health, develop leadership and organizational skills.
The curriculum of the 2012 program will include the following contents:

Renowned leaders have served as our guest lecturers.
Sponsored internship (doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers only)
Doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers will be sponsored to complete internship of three-month equivalent* in domestic and international locations.
*If it is difficult for you to work full-time for three consecutive months, you can also do two shorter internships (e.g., two six-week internships) at the same institution or work part-time for extended period.
ELIGIBILITY
Graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and working professionals in any academic discipline or field are welcome to apply for GHLP.
You can choose to apply as a regular student or as an auditor.

Other graduate students and working professionals are encouraged to apply as auditors.
No prior knowledge in medicine or global health is required. In the past programs, we accepted students with diverse backgrounds including medicine, nursing, engineering, biology, economics, or public policy.
TUITION, FEE AND FELLOWSHIP
All regular students and auditors will be awarded scholarships that cover full tuition of the program.
Additionally, regular students will receive fellowship that covers travel and accommodation costs for a three-month internship.
Working professionals will be charged participation fee of 20,000 yen (not per class, but for the entire duration of the program).
ADMISSIONS CRITERIA
We look for highly motivated graduate students and young professionals who aspire to become leaders in the field of global health and make positive changes to the world. Also, we expect each participant to make GHLP a stimulating place to learn.
We evaluate all applicants in the following five areas:
- Intellectual vitality and academic qualification
- Leadership potential and personal quality
- Motivation for building career in global health
- Strong commitment for completing the program ? attending all lectures (all students) and completing the internship requirement (regular students)
- English proficiency

Admissions Decision The project office will notify you of the admissions decision by March 6, 2012. The admissions decision will be finalized with approval by the GHLP board. * If the referrer you designate in Step 3 is not your academic advisor, we will ask you an additional letter of recommendation from your advisor before the final acceptance decision. |

Eligibility / 応募資格
We can accept a limited number of qualified undergraduate students.
However, please keep in mind that this program is designed for graduate-level students and the academic demands are high.
審査に合格すれば、学部生でも聴講生として参加することが可能です。
ただし、当プログラムは大学院生向けのプログラムであり、アカデミックな面でも高いレベルを求められますので、その点ご留意ください。
I applied for GHLP last year, but I was not admitted. Can I reapply?
昨年もGHLPに応募しましたが、残念ながら不合格でした。今年再応募することは可能でしょうか？
Yes, you are very welcome to reapply.
はい、再度応募いただくことが可能です。
I need to skip some lectures due to my schedule. Am I still eligible to apply?
スケジュールの関係で講義に全て出ることはできませんが、それでも聴講生として参加可能でしょうか？
In principle, you are allowed to skip only two lectures. You will not be admitted as an auditor if you already know that you will skip more than two classes.
原則として、講義の欠席は２回までしか認められませんので、既に３回以上欠席することが予めわかっている場合には聴講生として受け入れることができません。
I am in doctoral program but I am currently on leave of absence from the school. Am I still eligible to apply as a regular student?
博士課程に在学していますが休学中です。正規生として応募可能でしょうか？
Please apply as an auditor unless you plan to come back to school before April 2012.
もし2012年4月までに復学のご予定がない場合は、聴講生としてご応募ください。
What level of English proficiency is required?
英語力はどの程度必要でしょうか？
GHLP Lecturers assume that students can understand lectures in English and actively participate in class discussion. Please feel free to submit your application and the admissions committee will judge if you are proficient enough to participate in GHLP classes.
GHLPの講義は、受講生が英語での講義を理解でき、また英語でのディスカッションに活発に参加できるだけの英語力を有しているとの前提で進められます。面接などで講義についていけるだけの英語力を有するかどうかについては判断させていただきますので、お気軽にご応募ください。
Financial support / 参加費・交通費の補助
I reside in Kansai and need to take Shinkansen to attend the lectures. Can I have financial aid to attend this program?
関西に住んでおり、新幹線で通う必要があります。旅費の補助などはありますでしょうか？
No, we currently do not have travel grant for domestic transportation. However, an exception can be granted if you are a post-doctoral researcher.
現在のところ、残念ながら授業に参加するための国内旅費の補助はご用意がありません。ただし、ポスドクの方の場合は例外が認められる可能性もございますので、事務局にお問い合わせください。
I am not a Japanese national and I currently live outside Japan. If admitted, I plan to come to Japan to stay in Tokyo from April to June for the lecture series. Will GHLP pay for travel from my country to Japan and the cost of accommodation in Tokyo? Will the University of Tokyo sponsor my student visa if necessary?
現在海外に住んでおり、GHLPの講義期間中だけ東京に来る予定です。東京までの旅費や東京での滞在費は支給されますか？また、東京大学でビザのサポートはしてもらえますか？
No, we will not be able to provide financial support for your travel from your country to Japan or for your stay in Tokyo. You will need at least 3,000-4,000 USD to cover your accommodation and living expenses in Tokyo during your stay for the lecture series. Also, the University of Tokyo will not be able to sponsor you for a student visa.
いいえ、残念ながら、講義に参加するための海外からの渡航費や東京での滞在費はGHLPからは支給されません。また、東京大学から学生ビザを発行するサポートをすることもできませんので、ご自身でビザのスポンサーを見つけて頂く必要があります。

How much is the volume of assignments for the lectures?
レクチャーシリーズの期間中、どのくらいの量の課題が出ますか？
Every lecture requires students to complete reading assignment and some requires writing assignment. The volume of reading assignments can vary from a few pages to more than a hundred. We will make sure with lecturers that students will not be overloaded with assignment, but at the same time, we would expect students to enjoy the academic challenges and require them to complete all the assignments before class.
すべての講義において、リーディングが課され、いくつかの講義においてはライティングが課されます。リーディング課題は数ページのこともあれば、百ページ以上に及ぶこともあります。課題の量が過多にならないよう注意を払っていますが、一方で、受講生には、アカデミックなチャレンジを楽しみつつ、授業の前に全ての課題を終えることが求められます。
I am not sure if I can arrive before 5:30pm when the class starts. Would it be OK if I am late for class?
授業の始まる5:30pmまでに到着できるかどうかわかりません。授業に遅刻してもよいでしょうか？
We require students to be in classroom before the class starts. We could consider delaying the starting time if it makes sense to other participants, too. Please feel free to consult with the GHLP project office once you are admitted.
受講生は授業開始までに教室に到着することが求められますが、他の受講生にとっても問題なければ、授業の開始時刻自体を遅らせることも検討可能です。合格後、GHLP事務局にご相談ください。

Internship / インターンシップ
It would be hard for me to go on internship for three consecutive months. Is there any solution?
連続して３ヶ月以上インターンシップに行くことが難しいのですが、何か解決策はありますでしょうか。
It would be ideal for students to work full-time as an intern for more than three consecutive months at one institution. However, it is also possible to meet your internship requirement by doing two shorter internships (e.g., two six-week internships) at the same institution or working part-time for extended period. Please feel free to consult with your interviewer during the application process if you have a special situation.
フルタイムで３ヶ月以上のインターンシップを同一機関で実施していただくことが望ましいですが、それが難しい場合には、同一機関で２回に分けてインターンを行っていただいたり、パートタイムで長期のインターンを行っていただいたりする形で要件を満たすことも可能です。特別な事情がある場合には、応募時の面接の際、面接担当者にお気軽にご相談ください。
How much financial support can I have for internship?
インターンシップの奨学金はどの程度もらえますか？
The cost of transportation from where you live in Japan to where you work as an intern will be fully covered (e.g., the cost of international flight in case of overseas assignment; daily commuting cost in case of in-town assignment). Also, in case of out-of-town assignment, additional financial support will be provided and it will be largely enough to cover the cost of accommodation during your internship.
国内での居住地からインターンシップを行う場所までの交通費（例：海外の場合は国際線の飛行機代、国内で居住地から通勤圏内の場合は通勤に必要な交通費）は全額カバーされます。また、現在の居住地を離れてインターンシップを行う場合、宿泊費をまかなうのに概ね十分な金額の額が支給されます。
I am not a doctoral student or post-doctoral researcher. If I am admitted as an audit student, is there any chance for GHLP to grant me an exception to have financial support for internship?
私は博士課程の学生でもポスドクでもありませんが、例外的にインターンシップに行くための奨学金を得られる可能性はありますか？
Unfortunately, no exceptions can be granted. Only doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers will be eligible for financial support for internship.
例外規定はなく、博士課程の学生またはポスドクのみがインターンシップ奨学金の受給対象者となります。
If I decide to split the internship period into two and work at the same organization at two different times, does GHLP cover the cost of the second travel, too?
インターンシップを2回に分けて海外の同一機関で行う場合、旅費は2回ともカバーされるのでしょうか？
No, only the cost of the first travel will be covered. You have to pay for the second travel by yourself.
いいえ、旅費は最初の1回分しかカバーされません。
How does internship placement work?
インターン先をどこにするかについては、どのように決まっていくのでしょうか？
Students will usually start the process with making the list of organizations where they wish to work and discuss it with their GHLP mentors. Then students will send CV and cover letter to several organizations and go through interviews before they have offers.
まず、受講生自身がインターンとして働きたい組織のリストを作成し、GHLPメンターと相談します。その後、幾つかの組織に履歴書とカバーレターを送り、電話面接などを経てオファーを得るのが通常のプロセスです。

Can I exceed the word limit for the essay?
エッセイの字数制限を超えてもよいでしょうか？
No, please write your essays within the word limit. You will have an opportunity to prove your qualification during the interview.
エッセイの字数制限は厳守して下さい。書き足りない内容については、面接の際に直接お話をお聞かせ下さい。
How competitive is it to be admitted to GHLP?
競争倍率はどのくらいでしょうか。
We receive more applications than we have places. In particular, seats for auditors are highly competitive.
毎年、定員以上の応募をいただいており、ご応募いただいた方すべてにご参加いただくことが難しい状況です。聴講生枠の競争倍率は特に高くなる傾向にあります。
